SHAPE of PIXEL of digital LCD monitor???

does anybody know what the shape of a pixel of a digital LCD monitor would be. i used a magnifying glass to check one type and it was the striped arrangment, which is like having three rectangular bars forming into a square, with each rectangle being a red green and blue pigment. i just dont see how it could be anything else, since diagonal and triangular arrangements just dont make sense when it comes to LCDs, or if there any more types.

so basically i just want to make sure that the three rectangles actually form into a perfect square and nothing else. the only logical way of knowing this, since no technical information of the monitor seems to give this info, is to actually divide the length of the viewing area by the width of the viewing area, and this value should be the same as dividing the length of the dot pitch by the length of the width of the dot pitch. is there a formal property name for this, maybe something like dot aspect ratio?
