Is writing a forgotten art?

<o></o>I work with a small, independent software company (Celtx) making a free, open standards script writing tool that also provides the ability to add sound files, digital pictures and (at the moment limited to) QuickTime clips. The software also allows people to share projects to facilitate collaboration.

The idea is to extend the capabilities of traditional film making software by augmenting them with media and Internet features.

<o></o>Do people use pre-production software to make their films, or is it a “shoot first, work on the story later” kind of thing?

Seriously speaking, the couple of independent filmmakers I know personally rely more upon conventional storyboarding - but that may be partially due to their ages (older).
