    What's With The Red Daisies?

Surely you've seen the red daisies flash by while analyzing a disk. They are usually in the menu somewhere. I haven't been keeping track but they are in a Paramount disk I'm backing up. Someone obviously is going out of their way to insert this pic.

    What function does it serve?

I have always thought they were a watermark kind of thing.

I have seen them a couple of times.

Yeah, those are the ones. I've always wondered that myself. And what's with some DVD's having very bad pictures in MP2 format of the DVD covers?

Those are Jacket pictures (should be in a JACKET_P folder).

Some DVD players (mainly Sony) can display these pictures as the background on the TV when the DVD is stopped. Only some DVD's have them. Ghostbusters is one.

Yeah, Jacket_P folders. I knew these were the jacket pictures but never knew there were players that actually displayed this information. I imagine this would mainly be in multi-DVD players. Like ones that store 200+ discs.

Not really limited to that - 6 different single disc players (different brands) that i have ALL display jacket pictures...

Interesting. The most intriguing feature of my newest DVD player is custom backgrounds and JPEG playback.

Thanks! I wondered if it could be related to some copy protection scheme. Every now an then I get a flash of a boy and... what, the globe?

It's not the photo of the jumping boy. This one looks computer generated..

You'll never see in normal playback because they are unreferenced.

I first saw them in the Shrink preview.

They are usually located either in the menu VOBS as the last frame. Usually in VTS 01_0.VOB on the last couple of frames. I am thinking it may be some sort of TV setting adjustment, like a test pattern except it doesn't have any form of reference to it. Other than that, I really don't know what purpose it serves other than to say "Hey! Good job GEEK! You found the pretty flowers! Give them to your virtual girlfriend and be happy."

Well, if they are in the "Unreferenced Materials" folder like the "Jumping Boy" was, you should see them in the "Quick or Deep Analysis" window if you have "Video Preview" enabled. Although, I have never seen them.
