With compression no, but I have done backups with a lower compression than that ( in shrink 100% = no compression) and they looked great. tigerman8u posted in another topic that he is getting a 51-56" screen and will let us know how different compressed DVD's look on big screen. Other users here have large screen TV's/projection systems they would be able to speak of this from experience. The biggest I have is 32".Not registered Go here and click register to join the Digital Digest Forums

"how much compression is the ideal compression "
you have to take in different factors such as the type of movie ie high action, complexity of the scene/s etc.as stated above what is acceptable to one person might not be acceptable to somebody else.Comment

blu has a good sticky on compression at the link he provided. I've checked the bitrate on some dl dvd's and they have been in the 10mg range. IMO way higher than need be.Comment

If it helps at all, I have a 55" Widescreen HDTV on which I watch my backed up flicks. I've backed up a few movies with a pretty high compression rate. To name a few, "The Aviator" was compressed 39.8%, "Armageddon" 32%, "Alexander" 37.6%, "The Last Samurai" 35.1%, "Million Dollar Baby" 30.5%. I created a simple excel doc which I call "DVD Burn Log". Here I keep track of compression percentages, running time, full disc burn or not, etc.
As stated by other members in previous posts, it really does depend on the person watching. Like my dad can't tell the difference between black and white and color .... lol. I happen to be a little picky. I try not to compress my films more than 30%. 20% and less is almost the same as the original to me on my 55". 30% or more I'm able to tell the difference. It really depends on the film. On certain extremely favorite films I back up I'd rather split the burn onto discs so as to have no compression at all. Other films I don't mind compressing up to 30-40%.Comment
