    File Type?

When I'm watching a DVD that I bought from the shop, on my generic DVD player, what kind of file am I watching? I mean, is it an mpeg, an AVI file, a DVD file? What's the extension called?

thanks if you know and say

the dvd file extension should normally be VOB (VideoOBject)

the format of vob files should be mpeg-2

Thanks. I didn't know that what I was watching on a DVD was an mpeg2.

        Hi Hello People

VOB is basically an container format. That means the mpeg-2 video stream is bundled with several other streams like sound (different languages),subtitles and so on. So with ripping tools someone is able to extract every stream individually if needed or he can reduce VOB size. The IFO contain all the VOB content and storage infos and the BUP´s are simple backups of the IFOs.

Well I've managed to get VHS tapes onto my computer in the hope that I can someday put those onto DVD for longevity. That's the stage I am at now.

The next step is not very hard at all!

Go to Wallly - Mart and buy an HP dvd writer, the dvd writer should come with the software to produce your own home movies.

Play with the software and make a few starter dvd's, IE: download some mpegs from the internet and try making a dvd out of them.

            Next try your home movies.

It is important to try the smaller dvd's to get practice because burning large MPEG files (1 gb or larger) take a long time to convert, transcode and your computer may hang up if it is not configured as a "DVD creation machine".

P.S. Does anyone know how to do motion search in MPEG files (cross post)?

Cool, thanks. And these DVD's will be ok to play on generic DVD players?

Does anyone know if burning an mpeg2 file onto a blank DVD will enable me to play that DVD on a regular home DVD player?

Yes, just be willing to read your instruction manuals. What I mean is there are older DVD players (especially the super super super cheap super old models) that do not play DVD+R's.

Think of it like, CDs. Some car CD players still cannot play homemade CD's right?

yes, but you need to author it first then you can burn it on a disc.

Columbo, the answer is no. The question he was asking is if he could just burn the file to a blank DVD without authoring it.

no offense jmet, indirectly, the answer is yes, i made it clear what has to be done before he can burn the disc. maybe the wording wasn't the best, but it was a bit more than "no"

A simple question (such as his) calls for a simple answer (such as mine).

Hey, hey, easy fellas, let's not split hairs here!

So, I first need to 'author' the mpeg2 file, before burning it to DVD?

Can someone help me to understand how I 'author' the mpeg2 file?

                              thanks
