NEC DVD Writer and NVIDIA GeForce2 Problems?

    I have 2 apparent problems.

1... I have a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 (Microsoft Corporation) and I think it may be conflicting with some thing or it has some kind of other problem.

I try to capture video from my camcorder which is a JVC via firewire, the card I brought from ebay. It starts capturing but after a while the computer restarts.

Also my screen keeps sort of freezing I can see the mouse moving around but if i try to click things nothing happens, then after a few secs or mins the screen goes black and comes back on and then all is well again... --- What is going on?

2... DVD Writer is NEC DVD RW ND3500 writer: I tried to burn all my files to DVD this evening as I was going to drastically reinstall windows XP and see if it fixed my above problem but when I put a DVD into the drive it shows that there are 0MB free and 0MB used. I have also tried burning a DVD with nero but half way through copying the files the computer restarted this happened 2 times and so I have waisted 2 DVD's. I have burned DVD's in the past and I am unsure if I have successfully burned DVD since the above problem started. -- What is going on?

Are these 2 problems joint or connected and what are the solutions.

we'd need to know brand + model in order to see what chipset it uses

Are you using XP? If so are you using Service Pack 2? You can check by right clicking on 'My Computer' and going to 'Properties'. If you have Service Pack 2 it should tell you there. Otherwise download it from Microsoft's Website (start here ...)

Windows Update; update; security; secure; up-to-date; download; driver; patch; fix; hotfix; QFE; bug; critical; high priority; service pack; Automatic Updates; Windows XP; Windows 2000; Windows Server 2003; WinXP; Win2k; Win2000; WS2k3; WS2003; .NET Server; SP

While you're at it, you ought to 'Flash' the BIOS on your ASUS mothreboard. This involves downloading the latest one from the ASUS website. Go to ...

... and select 'Motherboard' from the first drop down list then 'SocketA(462)' from the second then your motherboard from the third. (Probably A7V8X-X.)

Here you will find all your drivers and BIOS Updates for your board.

If this doesn't work it is time to to a clean install of your system.

                        Good Luck !

                          Hi,

Yes I do have WINXP SP2.

Also at present my machine in not connect to the internet and I am unable to connect it to the internet.

Can I go to http://support.asus.com/download/do...SLanguage=en-us and follow your instructions and download the file to my pen drive at work and then install from there?

                          Cheers L

Yes, that should work. Make sure you note to model of your motherboard before you go to work!

                            Best of luck
