by hdtv, i mean free-to-air tv, which, when captured with a digital tv card, is around 1.4-1.8 MEGABYTES/second. that means hdtv hovers around 12 MEGABITS/second, when combined with our lousy stereo ac3 audio (we rarely get 5.1/dts, but when we do, like tonight, when theyre airing "catch me if you can", it looks and sounds absolutely amazing ). the idea of any normal person downloading such a large file is ridiculous. xvid is the best way to compress hdtv, but is still nowhere near the original picture...

in other countries, with more intelligent network executives (the US included, i think), they broadcast hdtv in much higher bitrates, such as 18megabits/second, and THAT is true hi-def

If you're talkng about Foxtel anonymez, I am also disappointed that most of their movie channels are stereo only. Only their pay per view seems to be 5.1 or perhaps the occasional flick on Showtime.

It also irritates me no end that they tend to broadcast in the dreaded Pan & Scan. I am forever setting it to WS.

As for regular "HDTV", it is years away from transmitting to the full potentia of our systems, isn't it? The channel 9 loop was the best thing going round and now that's off.

i wouldn't say its YEARS away, they could fix several things very very easily. for one, they could reduce the bitrate of their SD (standard def) streams, for example, you are not going t notice the difference between a 6mbit stream or a 20mbit stream at SD resolution... once they lower it, then can use the remaining bits to up the bitrate of the HD streams, where it is truly needed. and i can't think, for the life of me, why they refuse to put a 7-day EPG (electronic program guide/tv guide), or even a 1-day EPG. all we get is the lousy now/next info. all other countries have full EPG's. not only that, channel 7 needs to get their act together. no matter what they say, 576p at 50fps is NOT high-def.

and i hear the goverment is launching an inquiry of why the digital tv uptake in australia is so slow. there is simply nothing to gain except for the widescreen picture and quality, which most people won't notice on their regular tv's. i'd bet the uptake would be much faster if they simply dedicated a full hour to the EPG problem.

i've never had foxtel digital, but yeah i have seen the quality, and it is even worst than regular digital...
