the native resolution is the optimal setting, where each physical pixel on the LCD is going to represent 1 pixel in the image. in other words, its a perfect fit, and you will get the best image.

now having a 19" screen at 800x600 means each "pixel" in the image at that resolution is going to be, in a way, made up of more than one pixel, meaning each one is going to be huge. with pixels that big, its hard not to get a bocky, ugly image.

if you friend is experiencing image corruption, likely its a problem with the graphics card/drivers not being able to handle that resolution at a specific refresh rate. try changing the refresh rate, and hit the monitor's 'auto-adjust' button. that's usually the cause

So are you saying that a LCD CAN look good in 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200?

at those resolutions, yes. but it depends on the size of the monitor. the larger the screen, the worse the image.

for gaming, the problem is solved (to some extent) easily, just turn up the anti-aliasing. however, you will see less of the image than if you were running at higher res. (much like pan & scan )

i do all my gaming at the 'irregular' res of 1280x960. i get small black bars at the top & bottom of the screen

what i don't understand is why you would want a lower res?

My impression was that if a LCD was not in it's 'native' resolution, it looks blurry, while a CRT doesn't really care. If you're going for picture quality, I understand that CRT is the way to go.

I find that surfing the web at a higher res can be eye-straining. I find 1024x768 comfortable on a 19".

Help me out here because I'm in the market for an LCD. Does it look blurrier when it's not in its native resolution? Thanks.

Right, but if you switch to 1280x1024 for example, does it get blurry?

                              on a budget, yes

I have 2 lcd's but prefer my Logisys 17 .22 dp CRT on the GFmx400, less
                              eye strain, sharper picture.

                              no budget
To find a good LCD specify the lowest pixel pitch
                              like these

Thanks guys, but I'm still confused about this one point. Does the image become less sharp when and LCD is NOT in it's native resolution? If I didn't change resolutions, it wouldn't be an issue, but I do, so I need to know that the monitor will be sharp at 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200. On a CRT, the sharpness doesn't change.
