I have a sony external burner but it wont work unless i use nero

i have a laptop and a computer i can burn on the computer ok, it has nero.
but my laptop does not have nero. i dont know if my external burner and programs can burn the dvds. it is a sony dvd+- rw/ +-r DC 12V IN.
