Video ipod a go or no go?

I was interested in purchasing a video ipod. I went to the store and I saw the U2 demo they had playing. It looked OK but I saw some color banding usually indicating that the color depth is not adequate. However, I had no way of telling if this was due to the video/video compression or the screen itself. Does anyone have experience with the ipod video? Does anyone know how many colors it can display? I checked their site and came up empty. Also, has anyone been able to convert a DVD to a format that the ipod will accept? Any major flaws I should know about?

Seriously, that's another reason I went to the store to check it out. I wanted to see if the screen was big enough. It wasn't great, but it was adequate. One of the reasons was to have some movies stored for my daughter when we're at a restaurant or on a long line somewhere. I could put something she likes on there for her I figured. Also, I thought it might be a good time management tool for putting on TV that I've recorded but haven't had time to watch.

P.S. I did come across what you think of the ipod when I did my initial search.

I think PSP is the way to go for video.

I'd agree but it's too big, and I have other uses for the ipod, like storing photos and pcm's.

but i actually like the ipod, i think its a wonderful product, but i don't like where its going with video. IMO if they are going to do video, they should do it right...
