Thanks for your replies, I want to capture my old vhs movies to dvd. I have a Haupage mono card which has not been very succesful.
I have win xp, amd athlon3000, 512mb ram and a an extra drive 112 gb. I burn with nero 6. Any further help will be appreciated. Thanks Alan.
my two choices would be the ATI AIW or a Hauppage card. Hauppage is a hardware encoder card. ATI is a hybrid card (software and hardware). ATI has video filters which will allow you to filter/clean the video.
I'd also give a strong second to tigerman8u's two choices. I use both an ATI-AIW card and a Hauppauge PVR-150 and they both give great captures.
One thing to keep in mind is that the ATI-AIW cards support Macrovision so if your VHS tapes are commercial, copy-protected tapes then you'll have a problem capturing them with the All-in-Wonder series. The Hauppauge PVR-150/250 cards ignore Macrovision, and as tigerman8u said, they use hardware encoding.
If I'm capturing from TV I'll mostly use my ATI card but I'll use the Hauppauge for converting my old VHS tapes to DVD. If you shop around I think you could pick up a PVR-150 for $50-60.
Thanks guys again for your help. I'm very impressed by the very friendly advice I get in this forum. As you can see I'm a novice but I have been told about FUSION MPEG2 for downloading from VHS or TV. Apparently it synchronizes video and audio and does the work for the processor. Has anybody used it? Alan.
