inserting english subtitles in movies

i need help for inserting subtitles in mpeg or avi movies if there is anyone who can tell me or give me the software for this please help me in this matter.

For AVIs you could use VirtualDub with the VOBSub plugin

if you don't want the subtitles to be embedded into the files permanently, download & install 'vobsub'. make the video file and the subtitle file have the same file name (eg movie.avi and movie.srt). and play the file
