Ok guys, I'm TOTALLY stumped by this one. As Chewy and Blutach know, I got a hat of RITEK DVD+R DL's today. I eagerly burned my first disc, SWIII, only to be disappointed to find it skipping on my PS2. Then I tried my Pioneer which told me "NO DISC". Next I went to a Cyberhome CH300 and it played, but skipped near the middle. So I tried it on my computer and it worked fine. Then, after much consultation, I burned another DVD. This one played fine and got a Quality Score of 31 on a CDSpeed Scan. Then, just for the heck of it, I tried the first disc on my Pioneer and it played fine! I tried the other two and they played fine too! So, I ran a Scan again. Here's the kicker. The Quality score had gone up from a 17 to an 85! Attached are the two screens of the SAME disc. If anyone has an explanation, please let me know! BTW I handle all my DVD's by the edges and these have no dust/scratches. Some ideas I had. Could scanning the disc somehow set the dye better and hence more readable? Do DVD's just settle over time? Or has RITEK come up with a self-healing DVD?

I told you that version of cdspeed was glitchy,
I can't explain the disk not playing then playing,
but I can theorize about the scans, your burner is still learning,
including the scanning. Let it mature. This stuff will make
you think you're crazy, I'll meet in at the funny farm.
let's write it off to gremlins!
now you're ready for a benq or a drink -
I'm doing a second scan on the second disc now. I mean I'm happy that the discs are playing*, but it's confusing the $h!+ out of me. I just can't explain why the disc would be skipping at first, then play fine. May be I'll write the people at RITEK. Chewy, do you think you could ask the Freaks?
* I only watched a couple of seconds per chapter. However, this was enough to show problems the first time around.Beauty is in the eye of the Beer-Holder.

Thanks. I just finished Disc2 Scan2. Unfortunately, this disc did not heal. The score went down one point from 31 to 30. Now I'm starting to think, could a hair or some other foreign object have caused the initial problem?
Chewy, is it common to see a 85 and 30 in the same batch?Attached FilesBeauty is in the eye of the Beer-Holder.

Do you have pets? Is the computer in a dusty area? When I suspect
an optical drive glitching, I pull it and power up to open the tray and blow it out(air compressor), one guy who's a purist, disassembles his and cleans and relubricates every 3 months. I would say you would see more variation
with those ridata D01's than the ricohjpn or the Verbs. Let's hope you quit seeing 30's for whatever reason.Comment

Well, I'm happy that they're playing. No pets, Pretty dust free (I have allergies). But the fact that the DVD had problems on 3 DVD players seems to indicate a problem with the DVD. I'm surprised that the 30 plays. Although I'll have to do a more thorough check. I checked both discs for CRC errors and they came up clean. So I'm assuming they'll play fine?Beauty is in the eye of the Beer-Holder.

Either scan looks bad to me TNT. Slow down the scan to 2x and see how it goes.
Clearly, your burner didn't like the disk after the LB. Mighta had real trouble focussing the laser into L1.

Thanks guys. I just joined the freaks and was reading the reviews. I guess I'm getting lucky so far. Unfortunately, I can only burn at one speed being 2.4x. I can't think of what else to do. But then again, they're playing in my DVD players, so do I really have a complaint? I'll burn a couple more tomorrow. Just to confirm, Layer 0 is the "deeper" Layer?Beauty is in the eye of the Beer-Holder.
