Absolute beginner

Hi everybody,
I've recently started shooting video on a digital camcorder. When I play it on my TV it looks pretty good, but when I download it to my PC and play it as MPEG the picture is small or in low resolution. AVI is very heavy (8 gigs for 50 minutes) but doesn't look better on the computer screen.
Do I need to get a certain program in order to download, edit and save in the right format and the right resolution, so that I can burn it on CDs easily and then view it on any PC ?

first tell us how you are Capturing ur video from ur camera to pc?

what software uv used to do that? and at what settings if u can tell that.
also the AVI ur playing whats the problem in that? when playing on PC.
