    Pal to Ntsc dvd-r question

    Hi everybody,

    I just bought my first pal dvd today and even though I can watch it on my
    computer, I'd like to be able to watch it on my dvd player. I have a dvd
    burner and I know that I can rip the dvd to my harddrive and get rid of the
    region encoding but how do convert the pal to ntsc. I know that TMPGEenc
    will convert mpeg files.

    Does anyone have any suggestions.

      Heres some help. Pal to NTSC

      By the way, dont wory about ripping your cd onto pc to rid of region problem, dpeneding on what Stand Alone DVD Player u got there are ways to get around region coding (Depends on your type of DVD Player). Go to www.VCDHELP.com and there are heaps of stand alone DVD Region Hacks for various makes, and secondly if u do wanna convert to NTSC, from what i know try first converting to mpeg then use TMPEG, but i'm sure theres a better way, check out on the site above truck loads about conversion. But im definately sure about the DVD Region hack.

          I'm just personally curious to understand why you would buy PAL-format DVDs if your standalone (and, apparently, your part of the world) requires NTSC format?

              Because the dvd I bought, the BBC's 1968 version of Hound of the Baskervilles is not and probably will not be available on ntsc region 1.

                  Yeah I've just ripped my first British DVD (Hamilton Mattress - try finding that in Region 1!) but it doesn't seem play on my Sony player.

                  I'm assuming that it's because the Sony can't handle PAL - it may be that it can't read a DVD-RW; I haven't ruled that out yet, but it seems a less likely possibility

                  It seems that there are two options:

                  * Demultiplex and re-encode all the VOBs - this would be major hassle. I could just do the main title, but then I'd lose the features

                  * Play it on my backup DVD - an APEX 1500 which does PAL conversion and has been region free'd.

                  You may want to think about buying an APEX or other cheapo player; they are available for <$70 now - I was happy to pay $100 for mine.
