Odds are its a DivX error. I had to uninstall DivX in order to play anything even **** from websites (got sick of the Mozilla/Firefox error reporting box coming up EVERY TIME!). Odds are you have an older DivX codec installed from a bundle and the newest version is fighting with that edition.

What odds will you give me?

I put my money on MS's buggy thumbnail shell extension.
You can disable the extension by running regsvr32.exe /u shmedia.dll
regsvr32.exe shmedia.dll to restore things if it doesn't help.

Did you try playing the files in eDonkey? I think it has its own built in media player (not sure though, just based on other file-sharing programs)
