Try Ulead Video Studio. www.ulead.com for a trial - I have been using it for a while (got the retail version for christmas ) and it works great for converting and encoding WMV, AVI, and MPG files, and it can save as RM too.

that didnt work .. the avi file cannot be converted to VCD/MPG format ... and other programs put their watermarks over the video on the trial versions...does anybody know about a freeware avi to mpg convertor?

Try TMPGEnc, its among the best of the encoders, mpeg1 is free, mpeg2 is free for 30days.

I have never seen an AVI that Ulead couldn't open. What program was it made in?

I like SVCD2DVD, best program I've come across. It also converts PAL to NSTC. I then use Shrink to create dvd.

Use the latest version of HC016. Takes as input .avi file or d2v file and the output at mpeg2 level is m2v. Run HC016 at the best quality level. Freeware software. Compression down to 4.7gb.

you are not following the guide, this one of the most common problems to new users of tmpgenc and is always easy to circumvent. it would also help if you posted the file details. you seem to be in a rush and trying all kinds of things. i'd stick to one software.

                          FAQ

No Audio on Output File After Using TMPGEnc
This is usually caused by the compression on the audio of the source file. If it is an AVI file it is very common. With an AVI file the easiest things to do here are set DirectShow Multimedia File Reader's priority to 2 or even better demcompress the audio!

To change the priority of DirectShow, this is done simply by clicking option - environmental setting. Click the VFAPI plug-in tab. You will see DirectShow in the list usually with a priority of -1. Right click on the NAME (not the priority) and click higher priority until the priority is 2 and it is at the top of the list. To decompress the audio for better results, do the following with VirtualDUB...

                          1. Click Video - Direct Stream Copy.
                          2. Click Audio - Full Processing Mode.
                          3. Click Audio - Compression. Select and click ok!
                          4. Click File - Save AVI and try it with TMPGEnc.

I've converted dozens of avi files from pal to nstc and have no problems with audio sync after conversion.

I think your prog is similar to DivX2DVD, which I use, that also converts PAL to NTSC when you say "Force NTSC". It never makes sync problems.
