Help to convert a DVD Recorder file to AVI

I want to take a recording from my DVD Recorder, mpeg-2 file type VRO (with a BUP file). I have used DVGate Plus but I have a problem with the size of
the files created. For example, a 6 min 39 sec sequence takes up 118MB as mpg and 1.38GB as avi. I've been told Flaskmpeg can do this with VRO files and create an avi file of 40MB for this length of recording. I've tried Flaskmpeg but it will not open any file types - I get any error "An error occurred when opening the file" every time.

I am looking for options to:
    a) optimise settings in DVGate Plus or
    b) fix the flaskmpeg problem (I've deleted and reinstalled it) or
    c) some other free software.

    Any sugestions please.
