Breaking up a video file

Dvd's are just to big for an ipod to handle. Is it possible to take a dvd and break it up into like 5 parts, then convert each part to make a 5 part movie ? I have been searching and testing since Christmas with no luck. A long movie like harry potter can't make it to the end on a full charge. I need some advice or a point in the right direction.

It is easier to convert the whole movie to an AVI, then spilt the AVI using VirtualDub. Then convert with iTunes to your iPod.
