Play a PAL DVD in WMP 10

For some reason, I'm getting no sound I hear it in Nero Showtime and any other player, but why not WMP 10? Any thoughts? Also, seems specific to my laptop - whaat could I be missing or what could be corrupt?

Found out another thing. If I try to play the DVD or mounted image, no sound - but, if I unmount the image, and then navigate to the iso with wmp10 and open it, I get a message re: how I might be able to play it but it doesn't recognize the format, etc. Anyway, it plays fine.

That happened to me with an XviD AVI before I installed XviD, but not sure about a DVD though. Did your DVD drive come with any drivers?

Play it in Media Player Classic - see link in my signature. WMP is awful and is not designed to play DVDs.

I'm just confused. The only problem is with this pal DVD, and I just made an divx file from the DVD, and that plays in wmp 10 no problem.

Uninstall WMP10, install WMP9. Here is a Windows XP installer:

That should work better. WMP9 is discontinued by Microsoft because they like 10 better, but 9 is better in my opinion. One: WMP9 has that media search, and if you search for a song, you can probably burn it to a CD, or at least stream it for free. WMP10 makes you buy the songs and gives you 30 second samples. Gah, what's the point of that? Two: WMP9 lets you search for videos, WMP10 makes you use that cruddy MSN music videos thing and doesn't have even 10% of the selection available to WMP9.

Hope that gets my point across! And WMP does play DVDs just fine - just probably not made for PAL. It works with NTSC DVDs no problem.

Is it possible to actually uninstall wmp 10?

It should be. Did your computer come with it or did you upgrade it? Either way, go to Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs-Add/Remove Windows Components. Then uncheck WMP and click OK. Restart. Then install WMP9. That should work. If you DID upgrade from a previous version, go to Add/Remove Programs and scroll down and uninstall the update.

Won't work. Even thought I uninstalled WMP10, it seems it really doesn't uninstall. And, when I tried to install 9 (after the fake uninstall), it said I already had a more recent version of Media Player on my comp.

did you go to "add/remove windows components"? You could always use the brute force way and manually delete WMPlayer.EXE, but that MIGHT NOT WORK AND JUST MESS UP YOUR MACHINE!

Be sure to set a system restore point, and don't really delete WMplayer.EXE, just move it somewhere.

If your OS came with pre-installed WMP 10, you can't uninstall it and you shouldn't uninstall it otherwise you'll screw up your PC big time, especially uninstall it manually or delete it. IMHO, It wouldn't hurt to leave WMP 10 alone or it can be possible to unload it by going to Add and Remove Programs and press Add/Remove Windows Components. When the Windows Components Wizards opens, just remove the tick mark at Windows Media PLayer and click OK to complete. Doing this way, you don't uninstall WMP but to disable it from loading or running automatically. IMHO, WMP 9 or WMP 10 are basically all junk. If you need a good media player, follow blutach's advice, get the Media Player Classic

MP Classic is great. I guess I'm just obsessing about why - on this pc only - this particular PAL DVD won't play on WMP10. Just strange.

Really!!! I've never realized that Microsoft supports you to search and download free videos and music. So, good for you then, no need paying for music and videos. You can save money to buy nice software such as Canopus Procode 2, DVDReMake Pro....for example
