    SONY PSP UMD Format

I'm debating on whether to get a video ipod or a psp. I would be interested in watching my own videos on the PSP. Is it possible to make your own UMD discs? How involved is it?

Is the Nintendo DS an option for you? Then you can just buy a GBA Movie Player for about $35 USD, that uses Compact Flash cards upto 1GB to store the movies. The software even rips the DVDs for you!

I don't like the PSP because I am a Nintendo fan, nor do I like the iPod because of the whole market aimed at them. However, I will tell you that the PSP uses Memory Stick Pro Duo cards (VERY EXPENSIVE) that can hold movies. You then need that PSP Video converter program, another $20.

Really, the only good thing about the PSP is the screen. The DS has 2 screens, a touch screen, WiFi THAT WORKS, built in wireless, GBA mode, and don't forget it's only $120, with $30 games, the PSP is $250 with $50 games. Plus, the DS uses cartriges, less likely to get broken.

It seems to work on the GBA. That's what I have. Do you have one?

Nero Recode can make video files that save onto Sony Memory Sticks.

Other PSP software include PSPVideo 9.

I believe the PSP connects by USB with the memory stick inside.

Thanks, but memory sticks are expensive, so I wouldn't buy half a dozen. If that's the case, I might go with this GBA thing just for the fun of it.

No I don't have one but I read lots of good reviews about it. All you need is CF type I card and you are all set. Well you need a card reader too. You would just install the software, it makes a .GBV file that you then copy to the CF card. Then insert the card into the player, put the player in your GBA and watch the movie!

drf: Have you ordered from liksang before? I'm thinking of trying it out just for the fun of it, but nothing annoys me more than not getting product.

                Thanks

No, I haven't, but I think my friend has. It's based out of China, but it's probably fine because of all the people who have left positive feedback about the site.

If this helps you, they are also available on eBay for a couple dollars more. (search for Game Boy Movie Player)

Now that I've done some research, I think I might be leaning towards Play Yan. Looks like it's a bit more expensive, but it seems to have better quality and is an Official Nintendo product.

Actually I don't think it's better. And it's in Japanese (not that you care )

And SmartMedia cards are pretty hard to get now... the GBA movie player seems fine.

And put it this way, the GBA is not that great of quality, so who cares that much about "cutting edge graphics" and such.

And, the Movie Player's software lets you pick the compression, I don't think the PlayYan does that.
