        may i ask WHY?

        (sometimes a conversion is not necessary depending on what you plan to do with the file afterwards)

          because i have a divx software & i try before to burn avi & he doesn't play & i try with divx codec & it's working.
          so it's for that i asked.

              i explain again,i have some avi.movie & i try to burn on dvd-r but with no sucess and i download a new software & he give me a divx player & i try to burn my movie on dvd with this software & it's working & i have a lot avi. files so i would like to convert them on divx format.
              I find virtualdub on digital forum & i try with that but i don't now if it's work for the moment.
              If you better idea give it to me please.

                    If you mean that you are converting to DVD and the app doesn't like XviD, but likes DivX. You can just change the FourCC.

                    I'm still not exactly clear on what is going on though. What are the exact specs of the files that won't convert? Are you actually converting? Because you just said burn. Shouldn't matter what codec an avi uses or if it is even an avi if you are just burning data.
