how many minutes does it take to burn a full DVD on a 16X burner?

My old 4x Sony burner is making funny noises, so I guess
it's time to replace this old burner.

With my old 4X burner, it takes 15:37 to burn a full DVD,
filled to maximum capacity. (note, the time is checked
with the stopwatch on my watch, from the time I click
"Start Burn" to the time the finished DVD pops out of the
    burner)

How long will it take a newer 16X burner from Sony to
finish burning? (using Sony or TDK 16X compatible blank
    DVDs)

    Thanks for any info!

You should read this thread by blutach. Note the 4x burning.
"Wanted in 14 counties of this state. The condemned is found guilty of the crimes of murder, armed robbery of citizens, state banks and post offices, the theft of sacred objects, arson in a state prison, purgery, bigamy, deserting his wife and children, inciting prostitution, kidnapping, extortion, receiving stolen goods, selling stolen goods, passing counterfeit money, and contrary to the laws of this state, the condemned is guilty of using marked cards...therefore according to the powers vested in us, we sentence the accused here before us Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Ramirez also known as the Rat and any other aliases he may have to hang by the neck until dead."

i've found in the past if i burn over 4x the chances of my cpu being able to read that disc is only 40%. the disc will play in your dvd player but not in your cpu. I never burn past 4x.

      from my experience.

Usually burning times vary based on the burner used.

A mean value for a 16x burn is around 5:50-6:30 min.

Regarding burning speed, the golden rules in my opinion should be updated. With latest media available, aka 16x media, the best speed to burn is 16x or 12x.

Burning @4x a 16x certified media have an high probability to give a coaster.

The burning speed is not absolute, but is related to the media used.

I obtained very good results burning @12x a 8x certified media (a taiyo yuden), so the burning speed must be choose based on the burner/firmware/media used. It cannot be an absolute rule, because media variability is really high for DVD. Each user must choose the right burning speed based on media available, on burner used, and on firmware installed.

Too bad is an empirical method, but it's the only way to know what settings are the best for each user.

16x might be a bit fast, I would suggest 8x or 10x, if you are in a hurry, 12x.

What about using a 16x certified media(like Sony, TDK)
in a Sony burner with a top speed of only 4X?

            Thanks!

In my opinion this is not a good idea. For your burner you need to use max 8x certified media. For what I know burning a 16x media on your drive have an high probability to produce coasters.

As I said, the only way to know is to do a test. This is due to the very high media variability. CD media wasn't so higly variable in quality, and I wonder what will happen with blue-ray and HD-media...

I'd suggest a BenQ DW1640 over a Sony (still made by Lite-On?) burner.
