Will Xvid movies play in my Phillps DivX/DVD player?

I have a Philips DVP 642 which plays my DivX movies perfectly on my TV. Will Xvid videos also play in my philips? Currently it does support DivX 3.11 4.x and 5.x.

Yes, both codecs are similar and should play well, if the files are encoded with the correct conf.

Yeah. Stick with the Home Theatre profiles and avi as a container and you should be fine.
