PIO Mode Won't Go Away; Please Help

i've followed the directions perfectly on this page over and over again. for some reason, my device WILL NOT re-vert back to DMA. it's stuck on PIO Mode no matter how many times i uninstall the drivers and reboot my system.

can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong, or another way to fix this? i've fixed this problem many times before in the past, however this time it's not going away.

any solutions?

Uninstall the secondary channel - see Fix your DMA in my signature.

i've tried that bro. prior to your response, after your response, and nothing! i still get the same thing. in the past, when i've followed those directions you gave (like i said, i've had to deal w/this before) after the reboot, the 'Current Transfer Mode' would change to DMA.

is there any way else to fix this problem? any ideas what may be causing this to continue to stay in PIO Mode?

You tried uninstalling the device, rebooting and re-installing it?

XP will revert a drive to PIO if there are 6 transfer errors in a row. If it is an optical drive though, I don't see how that could be the case, since you wouldn't have used it after the reboot, so no chance for errors. The only other thing that could force PIO mode, is your BIOS settings for the channel.

thanks for you help bro! it's fixed now.

i read into that link about DMA in your sig...found another link on that page to another page, went there...it began to talk about some BIOS settings...got me thinking...so, i booted into System Setup and i found the problem.

that device was turned off, i can only assume that's why the change in mode didn't stick. although it was turned off in the BIOS, i was still able to use it. instead of my 16x, i was only getting a very sluggish 1.3x

how did it get turned off in bios? All by itself or was there a flash?

after reading that one page about the BIOS, i remembered that, out of nowhere my system booted up one day into the Setup and went directly to the device that was disabled. at the time, i didn't think anything of it, so i chose Save and Exit, and was on my way. not sure why that happened, but that's definately what did it for me.
