help... total ignorance

i am a total beginner(please forgive me)
i downloaded a avi movie and a divx5 player but it will not open the file.
windows media player said it could not find a decompressor...
what do i do next?

Try using the combination of 3.11 + 4.12 (Telling it not to playback 3.11 contents). Many have trouble playing back DivX movies with 5.

this 3.11+4.12 are these codecs or player versions and where can i get them?(i've just downloaded a movie for the first time...i didn't even realize it was possible yesterday)

Use Wmp6.4 for a beginning. You should be able to find it in the folder x:\Program Files\Windows Media Player, where x is your Windows partition. WMP6.4 goes under the name mplayer2.exe.

i found mplayer2.exe and tried it
it said no suitable decompressor could be found

You need to uninstall DivX5 first and then install the codecs I recommended to you and in the given order: 3.11 -> 4.12.

p.s. Actually you don't really need 4.12 if that movie was encoded with 3.11, but it never hurts to have it installed, as long as it does not interfere with 3.11 content playback.

i uninstalled divx5 then installed 3.11 then 4.12
turned off the computer,restarted and tried the movie in mplayer2
with no luck , i have tried 2 different files niether work

It's probably not a DivX file then. Open the video in Virtualdub and open File Information. Post everything you see here.

Your .AVI file, if it's legitimate, was created using the DivX v.3.11 codec...

You should be aware that the risk you take in downloading files is that there are an awful lot of phony files floating around...

It is indeed a 3.11-encoded movie, if it is real. One thing I should ask is whether you have properly installed 3.11 codec. Did you run the Register_Divx.exe file?

I've had a similar problem with some movies trying to run them under WinXP. I've found that WinDVD3 player will play most anything from Dvix to VCD . Infact I've found very little that it won't play.
