    After years of digital video use, this is the strangest thing i've ever seen....

    I've got a copy of 'pink flamingos' that was orignally a .mov quicktime extension. when i opened it in media player light, there was sound, but the screen was just white, and if i made it full screen, i could see there were subtitles at the bottom of the screen....

    I downloaded the real deal quicktime player, and it just crashed my computer completely, 3 times (it was frozen) and wouldn't open the file

    i tried opening it with gspot codec detective, and it just said it's an unkown file

    just for grins, i renamed the extension to .avi, and ALAS! video!

    But now i have no sound......

    Haali media splitter comfirmed finally that it IS indeed a quicktime video codec of some sort (it said undetermined)

    so now i can name it to .mov and have sound, or .avi and have video, but that's obviously not gonna cut it, hahaha

    tried renaming it wma, mov, qt, wmv, mpeg, mpg, all to no solution

    is this some sort of new file format? or is this just a badly encoded file, or missing a header to open the renderer or something? This is truly bizarre.

    Anyone know whats up?

    Thanks a lot in advance,

    Nate

        run media player classic, go options-->formats, head down the list to 'quicktime file' , use the drop-down box to change it from 'quicktime' to 'directshow'. play the file with the original extension

          in 6.4.9 you can only select from 'system default' and directx 7 and 9

          i tried playing with the different video renderers, too, and restarting each time, and still no dice

          extension is mov again, it just seems like it's a subtitle overlay gone horribly wrong

            go options-->formats
            not options-->output

              is there another program like gspot that might recognize it?

                  that was really only to make mpc decode files with mov/qt extension via dshow-- everybody should set it up like that (imo anyway), particularly for their AVC content.

                  uninstall quicktime & download quicktime alternative

                    ya, i've got quicktime alternative now

                    i uninstalled k-lite mega codec pack, and am installing the codecs individually

                    hopefully thos audio formats will do the trick, i've never heard of any of them

                    is there a reason for all these 9,403,804,123,941 different formats? Or do people just program them just to do it?

                    things were much less complicated when everything was divx in an avi carrier with mp3 audio, hahaha

                        good, codec packs are crap. most of them can be replaced with a good player and ffdshow (get it from http://www.x264.nl)

                        well dunno if there are THAT many

                          almost there!

                          windows media player says i need the 6D2E codec?????

                          def. haven't heard that one before, and the sound WAS playing fine when the quicktime codec was opening the video

                          any clue?

                            alright vlc plays it fine

                            i'm still curious about this tho, do you know what i need to do to get it to open in something less bulky than vlc?

                              Media Info should give you details on what streams, container, etc. mplayer should work though and is less bulky than VLC.
