Analogue video on serial digital cable

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there will be a problem sending analogue video down serial digital cable. Basically, I have an infrastructure installed for HD, but may need to use it for analogue. The serail digital cable is much thinner than cable normally used for analogue. Will this degrade the signal at all?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi!

    Analog Video 101....

Analog video consists of frequency from the range of 0Mhz to 4.5Mhz, at an amplitude of 1 volt peak to peak when viewed on an osciliscope or video waveform monitor, sync being aprox 1/3 the total signal amplitude at negative potential from the zero line.

The total bandwidth of a typical analog video signal is aprox 4.7Mhz wide, which means it needs a transmission cable capable of retaining this bandwidth, otherwise the signal will be degraded, fuzzy video and or loss of color signal or overall weakness of the entire signal.

Depending on the length of your proposed cable, your bound to run into problems using serial cable meant for digital signals. Simply piping analog video into a wire meant for a 1 and 0 signal and expecting no problems is asking for problems. Remember, analog is not a 1 and 0 signal, it is linear in nature.

In short, you will have troubles using serial digital cables piping analog video through them. However there are solutions...

There are neat little boxes that will take analog video and convert them to a digital signal that can be fed into your exsisting cables. This means at each point there will have to be a A/D-D/A converter.

You might consider going wireless, using small UHF units to transmit the video signal to the monitors. Its very easy to orient an antenna for best reception and transmission than it is to tangle with cables meant for digital signals and run into endless headaches.

    Here..I will fix it!
