    VideoDownloader

Firefox has the above extension - anyone know how to watch a video saved with this?

    Add-on, I mean - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/

I think the add on is just a sort of download manager. It probably does not change the original format of the video. So, download the file and see what is its extension(usually they are Quicktime or Realmedia or WMV).

it just gives you the direct link to the video, as opposed to viewing in the browser/streaming

personally i prefer the 'unplug' extension, videodownloader has some issues

The file type just says - "file" Maybe I need to add an extension? What file type does youtube use, for instance?

Sorry - there are specific directions to change the extension to .flv and to get the .flv player.
