    16:9 To 4:3

Is there any software that will convert widescreen to 'normal' TV ie 4:3

    TIA

Well, you could try simply changing the domain attributes from 16:9 auto letterbox to 16:9 auto pan & scan.

PgcEdit is the tool of choice here.

*And remember the Ashes are coming home to Australia in a few months *

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

Thanks for the swift reply Les I'll give it a try. I plan to get a widescreen TV shortly as everything seems to be in that format these days.

As for the Ashes, it won't suprise me one bit, they are playing like a team of misfits. After all the trouble over 'ball tampering' as well, I guess the England team is in for some stick especially if they loose the Ashes again so soon after winning them back. Or, maybe Freddie will come to the rescue....Watch this space....

      Cheers

        Frank.

You'll come across all kinds of problems doing that, most with films on the 2:35ratio. When films are converted from wide screen to the full frame for video, TV and DVD, they first go through a process when somebody sits in front of a machine with a wide screen, console and a joystick. In the wide screen is a square the same size square of a full frame TV screen. When a film is converted to the full frame, the joystick controls the movement of the square and what appears in the square is what appears on the TV screen. This is to capture certain things such as an actor on the far left or right-hand side of the wide screen or so whoever is talking or what is going on that me have to see etc. Without that technology, everything will be fixed to the middle of the wide screen all through a film and anything on the left or right-hand side would be missing except for the tip of somebody's head or whatever you're meant to see. You'll also have parts of the title sequence missing where the left and right-hand sides would be missing and the same with the end credits. That's why some films have the title sequence in wide screen and it goes to the full frame and back to wide screen for the end credits. You'll find better results with films in the 1:85 ratio because that wide screen is smaller than the 2:35 ratio.

        Darren.

Thanks for that Darren, it's saved me from ripping my hair out. I tried PgcEdit and changing the domain but that doesn't seem to have worked so I'll just have to zoom in and loose the edges or get a widescreen TV sooner rather than later.( I was going to hang on till Christmas )

This forum has been a godsend to me, I know nothing about video but find there's always soemone on this forum who can point me in the right direction when I hit a problem. Plus, there's so much good quality software for doing all manner of things to corect problem recordings and a lot of it is free for the asking which is a big help to those of us on fixed incomes ( pensioners ).

I'll take this opportunity if I may to once again thank ALL those people out there happy to share their knowledge, it's really appreciated.

          Kindest regards

            FrankC,

This does NOT change the aspect ratio from SOURCE 16:9 widescreen to 4:3 full screen but from my viewpoint the next best thing when used on a full screen 4:3 TV.

            1. Use the first level of zoom on your remote. OR
            2. Use software program TMPGEnc Plus to remove the black north and south borders called frame clip option, set TMPGEnc Plus in options to (No Margins Keep Aspect Ratio) OR
            3. Get a modern widescreen TV

Many thanks for your input gentlemen. I'll close this thread and go buy a Widescreen telly, HD ready of course.

Don't forget that with Widescreen TV's, you will still get borders top and bottom with films in ratios such as 2.35:1. Films at 178:1 and 1:85:1 should have no border visible (due to TV overscan)

But you will enjoy what the filmakers actually wanted you to see, unlimited by the constraints of a TV set.

                      Hello, Frank.

                      You're welcome.

Another problem with this matter. If you have a change of mind to keep wide screen and you want to rip a programme such as the making of a film and the programme is on the 1:85 and the clips of the film are on the 2:35, so far to my knowledge when the clips appear on the screen on the 2:35, they rip in the 1:85 because of the setting. That is off-putting, mostly if the programme is in the full frame because the clips would lose all the wide screen.

Sorry to rattle on. I mentioned that so that you should also keep that in mind. I hope I can get some good software that does good picture and with an auto setting for full frame and different wide screen formats.

                      Regards.

                      Darren.

                        Hello.

I wish wide screen TVs would be made with a wider screen. I don't know how many or if any of you have noticed this, when you play a wide screen DVD in a PC, you see a little more on the left and right-hand sides on a PC monitor. It's not much but it's more.

                        Darren.

That is because TV has overscan and PC's do not. The picture is hidden by the TV. The widescreen TV cannot be any wider or you will get borders left and right when playing a 178:1 or 185:1 ratio DVD.

You can get rid of overscan by going into the factory settings on many sets if it bothers you.

Give me a 4:3 set over a wide screen anyday. Dam I wish they would make HD sets in 4:3.

Very little is 4:3 now in the UK. There isn't even 4:3 TV's on sale anymore. I have had widescreen for the last six years and wouldn't want to go back.
