There could be any number of reasons for your problem regarding downloaded videos. Do the following:

    1) Load the file into VirtualDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

And tell us also WHAT you have got installed in your system. I want to see that you have DirectX, DivX codecs and your video card driver installed, in the least.

You are one very confused person. I asked if you have the THREE afore-mentioned stuff INSTALLED in your system, not just their installers residing there.

            Follow my instructions:
            1. Uninstall DivX5, if you have it installed already. You know how to uninstall programs, don't you?
            2. Install DivX3.11, followed by 4.12 (Saying 'No' to its offer to play 3.11 contents). Install the codecs and not simply downloading them only. Find the codecs here: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html
            3. Find Windows Media Player in x:\program files\windows media player\, where x is your windows partition. WMP6.4 goes by the filename mplayer2.exe. Use THIS to play your videos.
            4. Lastly, follow the given instructions carefully and read it again if you don't get it the first time. We can't help you at all if you're unwilling to help yourself.

Good to hear that. Just remember to read the manual or instructions slowly and carefully. You won't go wrong there.
