    External HD Question.

    Hi all,

I need an external HD, but I wanted some feed back before I bought. What exactly do these one button back ups do? Do they back up a whole drive or can you select certain folders? Do most of them require a separate power supply? Any particular brands to stay away from? I was thinking of WD or Seagate. Any useful comments would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I was thinking about this one.

Good topic TNT its like you read my mind I was thinking of posting a thread on what is the best external HD out there these days.
I too am looking for something external / to be able to back up over flow data and music to free up some of my HD space on my internal.

I have the very same External that you are considering TNT. This one does not have the one touch backup feature, but is still very good. I use mine for storing all my ISO files and photos and such. It has saved me alot of defragging on my C drive. I think I paid the same price for mine at Wally World.

Thanks, volfann. It looks like most HD's need separate power supplies.

This is the external HD I bought to store my music, pics, and hubby's work stuff. I got it on sale, and with my rewards zone certificates I paid $69.00 for it.

I just right click on start and drag whatever I want into it. Very easy.

I had a Maxtor III 200 GB's for about three weeks & you could pick & choose what you wanted to save with it, personal stuff like pics, audio files & ISOs etc. I am now trying out a Comstar 300 GB's, it also has onetouch capability but I don't think I will use it plus the fact it might say Comstar but it has a Maxtor ID.

Thanks guys. I ordered a Western Digital Passport. It's small and doesn't need a separate power supply. I hope it works out.

I bought a HD enclosure and it's working fine.
I reccomend buying a cheaper internal drive and just getting one of those instead of wasting money on an external drive, but it's your preference.

Ya I am thinking that too TNT pointed those out to me and it seems like a better idea. I dont mind it having a spearate power supply and that one has 2 fans for cooling. I have priced it all out and I can get a 500 gig HD and that external inclosure for less then 1 200 gig external drive. So that seems to make more sense.

I am glad to see someone else has had good luck with them.

I wasnt sure how good they would work.

The only thing with the enclosures is that they don't come with one button back up capabilities as far as I know; if you're into that sort of thing.

Mine has no fans at all, and works fine. It does need to be plugged in even thought it said it didn't. However when you have a power strip with your computer it's no big deal.

That is until the fuse goes "PoP" anyways.
