Picture Saving

I use Yahoo Beta and I have a strange thing happening. When somebody sends me a picture under JPEG or an animated picture that is always under GIF, when I want to save straight from any e-mail, it wants to save as Bitmap. I had this problem a few years ago but I can't remember what I did to fix it. As we all know, Bitmap uses a giant amount of disk space and saving animation under Bitmap, it kills the animation to a still picture. I have to mess about converting the pictures to JPEG after saving to my hard drive before saving them to the correct folders where I want them and that can be a bit of a pain at times.

When I want to save a picture under JPEG from the internet, it saves under JPEG straight away. My e-mail account is playing silly games. I've asked Yahoo but they never listen.

when you clive "save as" can you not change the drop-down menu to something else?

I can't. Bitmap is the only one available. I can save from the web with any other file type.

I get this at work sometimes when opening attachments, I have never worked out what causes it either. I don't see the problem at home tho....

It is a strange problem, indeed. When I click on the attachment link in an e-mail, the download box appears and I can save to JPEG either by clicking on Open or Save. It only fails to Bitmap when I right-click on a photo in an e-mail. The problem isn't as bad as it used to be because when I first had this, it was doing it from web sites, too. As I mentioned in a previous post, I can save to JPEG from web sites with no problem.

This has nothing to do with the problem but it's amazing how many people upload photos to the internet using Bitmap. Not everyone does as we all know, only some. Anyway, they don't realize they are wasting so much of their Domain web space. Saving a wallpaper-sized photo using Bitmap must use as much disk space as a one-minute audio track using MP3. Why they use Bitmap is a mystery and a waste of money.

solved-- they don't know any better

there is no reason to use bmp; for compression, jpeg. for lossless compression, png. the only advantage i can think of is output speed

I agree. They use it because they are in a world of their own. Next they'll get vegtables mixed-up with fruit.

When I save photos, it can be annoying when I have to convert them to JPEG.

That's my beef with Photo Shop, they save as a pdd file and to export it and save it as a jpeg takes so long.

photoshop is primarily for image editing, not format conversion; PSD is perfect for it, i'd be very annoyed if it saved any other format by default.

I find it annoying with some photo software when it's defaulted to a rare file type and it means having to change it to JPEG during each save. Live Pix is defaulted to the LP file type. Not many photo softwares have LP. Some people can have photo software that defaults to a rare file type and when they either upload or send a photo to somebody, not many people can view it.

What annoys me is when I download video clips and it's on the MOV file type. It gets to be too much hassle converting them, mostly when it's for a one-off view.

RAR Folders are like Zip Files and that annoyed me when I couldn't open them and I had to get Win RAR.

I know what you mean. Some people always invite the middleman. This reminds me of when I bought a Philips DVD recorder with a hard drive. The model I had has a buffer recorder that records non-stop and when it reaches the end of the buffer it starts from the beginning and erases everything unless you use an annoying edit routine to transfer a recording to the hard drive ready for burning to DVD. The buffer bit was un-called for and the edit bit was so annoying with the long route. I had to do this, do that, it put me on hold and I was out in the cold. I got so angry I sent it back and got a Sony DVD recorder as my replacement with a hard drive and I can record to the hard drive as easy as recording to DVD from a machine that doesn't even have a hard drive or as easy as recording to VHS. My Sony DVD recorder also has a quicker edit mode, too. Why Philips created their stupid pile of junk with the middleman causing harrasement all over the place I'll never know. It was like trying to find my way out of a maze during the night of thick fog.

I always buy the best Sony I can afford. Whether its a camera, TV, or DVD player. I know their products will last me years. I'm still watching my 1993 Trinitron!

I've always prefered Sony. Years ago I bought a Sanyo wide screen TV and its on it's last legs. The picture sometimes has bright spots as if the actors in a film have a fog light beaming in their faces at point-blank range and the sound through the speakers is awful. I didn't know that about the sound at first, not for months because I always have my films coming through my Hi-Fi system because that's all I have for Stereo Surround and Prologic sound. I need to get a new wide screen TV. Well, of course I do by the sounds of it. Lol. My dad and one of my brothers have a Sony wide screen TV each and theirs are still running as smooth as a ripple and their TVs are older than mine. My second favourite is JVC.
