    Best format for DVD players?

I'm just a newbie but I want to make a DVD that will play on almost any TV connected DVD player. What format do I need to use on my WinFast TV recording software to be able to make such a DVD?
    Thanks

MPEG-2 is a DVD compliant format. This is what most encoders produce for burning DVD video.

yes, mpeg-2, then author to dvd files, burn on a DVD+R bitset to dvd-rom if possible, that should be able to play in any player.

        Newbie problem

I nearly catch the meaning of the terms you used but not quite. Is there a site I can visit to learn the basics that will enable me to follow your instructions.
