I have a Panasonic DVD recorder which works perfectly well except that when I record a program with CC (close captioning) and I play it back, my TV won’t show the CC. The TV shows CC of any program received via cable TV perfectly well. I went over the DVD recorder set up again and everything is OK. Yes that is a bit unusual that the CC data which is embedded on line 21 of the vertical blanking pulse does not show on your recorded discs.

I would check the Panasonic website to see if that particular unit has some firmware update that addresses this issue. By law, all recorders must record and pass the CC data by default.
