How to clean vcr heads without damaging and opening the VCR

What I said is how "I" prefer to clean the tapes, in the forward direction. There is no set rule to which direction cleaning can occur. However if you use one of the tape rejuvinator/cleaner units, you will find that the unit, all of them, clean the tape in the FORWARD direction, since the cleaning crystal's machined edge only works if the tape is moving in its forward direction. Some of them can have the dual edge crystal so the machine will clean in both directions. But by default they clean in the forward direction.

The video drum is going to be specific for that particular model. There may be a "sub" video head drum for it, but there never is a "generic" replacement part when it comes to electronics.
