avi conversion to dvd

I need help
I am converting avi movies to mpeg 2 format w/tmpeg
I am using the dvd template.
then burning to dvdr
Is this the best possible quality that I can get or is there
something else I can do?
The movies on dvdr I am making turn out fine but resolution not
very good.
Also to convert from avi to the dvdr template it takes a while w/tmpeg...
If this is all I can do I will just live w/ what I am making

They're not going to be any better than the original .AVI files...

When you convert from avi to mpeg do you use
tmpeg?
If so which template do you use?
Do you use dvd template or vcd template
