AVI vs. MPEG quality! SCREENSHOTS!!

I asked about this before, but I think some screenshots will show the drastic differences I am seeing between AVI and MPEG formats during playback. Does anyone know if this is normal, or might I have a bad set of codecs that if giving me poor MPEG quality?

Below are screens from the exact same film:

Screen from a 708 MB MPG file:

My answer to your previous post should have given some insights for your question. Basically, a DivX-compressed (Is this AVI DivX?) is capable of higher compression rate and hence can fit more data per MB allocated to it.

I see...

In the other thread you linked me, the person said that the quality he saw between AVI and MPEG was relatively similar, hence I was wondering if it was normal to have such a drastic quality difference. While the AVI file is DiVX encoded, I am unsure about the MPG file, but I would assume it is not.

There are many possibilities actually. One of them is whoever encoded the MPG file did not do it properly and ended up with "crap" quality. All in all, a DivX video, as I previously stated, is capable of higher compression rate, much like MP3 to audio (I was amazed at discovering that we can fit a whole piece of music track into 3-5MB file and still attain good quality).

now i'm not an expert on the mpeg format or encoding of... but looking over some of the encoding options in tmpgenc. There is an output yuv setting under 'special settings' in the 'quantize maitrix' tab. The tool-tip says something like "Outputs YUV data in Basic YCbCr, not CCIR601, Then, Y range of MPEG YCbCr is not 8-235, but 0-255".
Now like I said i'm no expert on this, but my guess is that checking this would result in brighter whites and darker blacks in the picture.
Other than that, the blurriness could be the result of low resolution, or other settings.

As Enchanter has mentioned, the way the AVI was converted to MPEG will definatley have a HUGE affect on the MPEG quality. If using TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG just be sure to select slow or very slow conversion rate if you want premimum quality. However the quality of the MPEG will depend also on the quality of the original AVI, ie. if its sub-standard the MPEG will be also.
