    Shattered Disc

Hey I was just in the process of ripping one of my music CD's and my burner shattered the disc. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

I never had that problem but my kids are always cracking their CD-ROMs by their abuse. I just straighten out the read surface and put a label on it to stabilize it. I then COF slowly or read to the HD then burn. So far, I have been able to salvage all.

But actually exploding?? Maybe there was water trapped between the layers. When the laser hit the water, it would exploded from expansion.

I dont think, any speed can shatter a disk, unless its already cracked/ already on the verge of breaking and the disk looses control over its spinning speed and let it free.

Its a very one-off incident, I must say.

Exactly. I recall viewing a scientific programme in Discovery channel where they performed an experiment to see what happens when a CD is spinned at very high speed(far above the limits at which a CD rom will spin it).Nothing destructive happened to intact CDs.

That was in MythBusters Season 1 Episode 2. They had confirmed that a CD can explode at 52x speed or 20,000 rpms.

            You can see it here.

I've seen one completely shatter in a drive once. It blew up into little pieces. I'm not sure if the disc was already cracked before entering the drive. I just witnessed the incident. Weird, coz when you try and snap them in half they bend like rubber.
