What is your acceptable level of compression?

I've noticed that a lot of modern discs are in the 7 gig range meaning that even if you eliminate everything else but the film itself, it will still have to be compressed. For instance, any of the three Indiana Jones films were 6-7 GB solo so fitting one on a single-layer disc took some compression.

When this happens, what do you find to be an acceptable level of compression in terms of percentage?

their runtime was only about 2 hours apeice, after stripping out the extra sound tracks and depending upon keeping the credits, you should have a compression somewhere in the 70-80% with dvdshrink, using aec and DA

For Indy, I was between 70-80% with dvdshrink, but I didn't use AEC or DA because to do so would've taken 4-5 hours to process and I didn't have that kind of time.

In that case with such a slow computer, I would kill everything I could, including all credits to keep the compression as low as possible and quality up.

Thanks blutach, but I wasn't looking for a tut. I just wanted to chat with people who are more experienced in shrinking/burning and see what their personal preferences are. I was hoping to learn a few things through other people's personal experiences, but it seems no one wants to share.

I have done anywhere from 50+ & not had a problem but there is more involved like the blank media used etc.

I have had good luck so far with compression at 50 and higher. Still get good picture quality on 32 inch widescreen using progressive scan. Anything over 2.5 hours I will usually burn to DL disc.
Stick to decent media for best results and don't try to burn at max speed.

Well Spacker Dave, here is my .02

blu's compression link contains great info./theory on the bitrate, which is very important to look at. I have heavily compressed some of my backups, & have noticed little degradation of the resulting video; But, I am only watching on a "square" 27". Most folks with W/S & larger TV's will probably notice problems with very heavy compression rates that I would not with my current setup.

I figure by the time I get around to upgrading to a 60" W/S, my backups will be worn out by then, so I can make another backup at a more suitable compression level, maybe even burn on DL by that time...

About quality, I remember a Starwars-ep3 dvd5 recompressed edition made with 8 passes (dvd-video) ...

p.s.: although, I make all my backups in xvid or x264 with target size 1/2 dvd5 or full dvd5, I use the dvd-video only as a source
