    5 minutes avi @ 46 mb normal?

converted a 5 minute mpg to avi compressed using xvid @ 3.00 (target quantizer) - the quality is just above where it would start showing those annoying small squares that make quality bad. is this normal size? sucks how you can't get good quality in low size *sigh*

    is this normal size?
Yes. If you're after good compression, do a 2-pass encode and use decent settings (search).

hmm, i noticed that when i record a video that has more action in it, the size is bigger... like an fmv from a game or explosions, cut scenes... stuff like that. is that true?

The encoder gives as much bits as needed to each frame in order to achieve a constant quality. When there is lots of motion or difference between frames, more bits are needed.

Xvid is encoding exactly how you tell it to.
