Convert dvd .vob files to mpeg1?

Hi:
I need to convert some ripped DVDs to mpeg1 format. I would like to know of freeware programs to do this. I have tried dvdx and AutoGK with bad results...All suggestions welcome.

TMPGEnc or super. rename the vobs with ".mpg" extensions first.

Super is excellent. It uses ffmpeg as an encoder, which is more than adequate.

I prefer AutoGK myself, it's about the best one-click encoder I've used. If that doesn't give good results, I don't know what will...

And it also depends on your size requirement. If your goal is to put an entire movie in 700MB so you can burn it to CD-R, of course it will look bad, nothing short of super-filtering can make a movie look good at that size (but I have high standards, keep that in mind).

Also, use AutoGK with XVID... DivX doesn't work as well (and heck, mine doesn't even work with AutoGK, only the old versions do).

I don't mean to insult SUPER or whatever, I've never used it... but as I said before, it's all based on what you want. If you want purely quality and don't care about size, using XVID on 100% mode gives fine results with about 1/3 the size of the original DVD.

I just realized you wanted MPEG1, and not AVI. If you're trying to make a VCD, stuff like Nero can do it as well, ignore everything I just said about AutoGK unless you want AVI LOL

mpeg4 ... so I guess you want to play them back on iPod!
