    Firmware updating?

I am trying to figure out, as a starter, how to update my firmware for my DVD/R drive. It's been failing when I try to burn things. To be honest, I don't even know which one it is. I have a dell laptop (inspirion 6000) that's about 2 years old.

does anyone have any idea how I can find this out and get it updated?

BR7 method works well; You can also check - Dev. manager, Open DVD Drive/R Click/Properties/ last tab, Details. The drive will be listed in the white area, & will include the firmware rev.

From that info., you can search for it here

Another method would be to go to Dell website, look up your model/serial #, maybe you will find the update info.

Liggy and Dee have lots of modded firmware for this burner, most for bitsetting.

That drive is getting old as even the latest firmware is 2 years old. Has it been used a lot for burning?

                Physical memory : 511MB (523584kB)
                Free physical memory: 129MB (132908kB)
                Memory in use : 74 %
You should reduce running processes before next burn.

I tried to update with the newer rev. of the firmware that you found, BR7, but it says that it failed and cannot find the driver.

I'm not sure what to do? I'm really new at this, and I don't ever understand half of the things that I'm reading to do.

                        Easy way is;
Start>Run>Type "msconfig" (without the quotes). Click startup tab, select disable all, & restart. That will keep unnecessary processes/programs from running at startup, which can be resource & memory hogs.

And, post #9; I believe Chewy is trying to tell you that your burner doesn't perform well with that brand of media...

first off that firmware is the latest

and flashing those drives is dangerous, using the dell firmware was your best choice

now on to why won't the sony disks work?

                          here's a technical lesson!

                          DVD,DVD-R,DVD+R,patch,riplock patch,riplock removed,read speed patch,speed edit,write strategy,swapping,media code,Liteon,Benq 822,Benq DW822,Benq 1620,Benq DW1620,Benq 1640,Benq DW1640,LG 4163,LG 4165,LG 4167,NEC ND-3520A,ND-3540A,NEC 3520,NEC 3540,NEC 4550,Pioneer 109,Pioneer 110,BTC,Samsung,Artec

                          download and read

now if we go to Liggy and Dee's page and download the firmware in question

we open the media tables from the firmware and voila, no support for 16x sony dvd-r
