    Substitute for Nero Burning?

I need to copy a DVD and select a portion of it to show to my literature class. I was told that I'd have to buy Nero and then use DVD Shrinker.
    Questions:
    1) is there an alternative to Nero? It costs $80 at present.
    2) what kind of format does Nero turn the DVD into? I assume that this format is the one DVD shrinker prefers.

Please help this DVD tech neophyte!

    Thanks,
