Alt + Enter won't exit full screen

Whenever I open a video in WM player or in Winamp, the videos automatically open in full screen. Naturally, I tried Alt+Enter to return the video to normal size, but for some reason it doesn't work at all- a brief flash of WM is visible then back to full screen video. I tried setting the video size to 50 percent, still nothing. I am utterly perplexed. Anyone?

Have you tried 'Esc'? That's the trigger in most of the software I use.

yep, I've tried it. no luck though, I either have to alt-f4 it or ctrl-w it in media player. ctrl-w only stops the video and makes the player visible, but regardless of what i set the video size to it resumes in full screen with the same problem. I'm thinking that since it does the same thing in other applications it may be related to something independent of them both, but I'm not really sure where to start looking.
