I need some guidance, from my understanding the center speaker handles all the voices primarily. I'm not sure what's wrong with my system but the volume is up pretty loud and all the other speakers are very loud when something other than talking occurs. I just purchased a brand new Sony receiver which from my understanding is one of thr top of its class. I was trying to get off fairly economically and I'm using the same 5 speakers that came with my Panasonic DVD/Surround sound system. Does that play a big role? That set-up wasnt cheap either! I did go out and buy a polk audio powered sub so I at least did that much. Would it make a difference if I just changed the center speaker? I know for a fact that the speaker is not blown so that isnt the issue. When I do a caliberation all speakers sound very loud and clear, I'm wondering if there is a special setting that I should be looking into? Any help would be much appreciated.
I can't hear voices well!!!

Does this happen with all DVDs? Sometimes, DVDs are muxed rather badly. CHeck the setup on your amp to ensure it is correct and each channel is going to the correct speaker. There are usually test routines you can go thru, or get one of those DVDs with the "Video and audio set up" extra on it.

Make sure the DVD player is set to output 5.1 channel audio in RAW mode (there might also be a setting there specifically for the center channel, it depends on the player), and make sure the receiver is set to Dolby Digital 5.1 mode, rather than some fake simulated surround (turn off any DSP effects on the receiver to see if it helps).
It could be that your center speaker is too weak for the amp. A lot of 5.1 speaker systems come with lowly powered center speakers.
If everything is set up fine and the speakers are fine (from what you've said, it sounds like the speakers should be fine, pun unintended), then perhaps the receiver will have a "late night" or "Dynamic Range Compression (DRC)" mode that will even out the sounds of the movie so that you can hear dialogue clearly without also having the explosions shake your whole room.Comment
