Sony handycam video help

Hi,
please solve my problem,
i have one sony handycam, which records video on a cassette,
when i copy it on my computer it makes a file in avi format of about 40 GB, mu harddisk is full now, i try some softwares to convert but it losses lot of quality, please tell me any software for converting or any software for directly copying in low size from my handycam, please help me.

Hello sandeep_pkl

It appears that your Handycam is a DV one and you are capturing using a Firewire port (what Sony calls a i-Link cable capture). You did not mention which format you want your end result. I am giving you both the options:

If you want to make DVD:

Use
1. ConvertXToDVD- it is a commercial software but not that pricey and worth of every penny. Gives very good output quality.
2. AVI2DVD- Freeware, but has a learning curve. Output quality is great. You can find a guide in this forum I think.

If you need professional quality output then I can only suggest costly Editing Softwares like Adobe Premiere Pro. This one is a pro tool and hence has a very steep learning curve. I do not think it will be worth for you.

For CD:

TMPGEnc- this one is freeware for MPEG1 (the file format necessary to make VCD) conversion.

There is one more built in option in Windows Xp, called Windows Movie Maker. But I never used it as I do not like the lack of control. But you may also try it.
