Aspect Ratios ?!

Okay so I need to get some answers & since I am still new to the forum unsure if this is the right place to post & if incorrect pls repost in the right forum/thread etc. & educate me before issuing an infraction as I am here to learn & not ahem...get punished ...

I have a Square TV (Sony WEGA)
What I want to know is when converting vids - how will they appear, will there be any info missing when Square Pixel/1:1 is selected as opposed to 4:3 ? What basically is the difference visually between the 2 regardless of the source etc. (I am under the Canadian/US NTSC - thats a whole other confusion Pal/NTSC conversion as viewed on my square TV.)

You converting to DVD? Or have an original DVD?

There are 2 aspect ratios, the display and pixel. The DAR is either 4:3 or 16:9 (the vast majority are these, although extras are often 4:3).

If 16:9 it must be marked as either or both automatic letterbox (which gives black bars top and bottom) or automatic pan and scan (which chops things off left and right but fills the screen - yecch!).

The PAR is much more complex. Easiest if you just trawl thru this thread and come back with more specific questions.

Thanks for the reply - what I wanted to know was....an AVI file in 4:3 ratio - when re-encoded into DVD...say with TMPGEnc it shows a "Safe Area" this area is what will show on my square TV (my understanding is that there 'may' be more than the safe area that shows on TV but that will be a bonus...correct ?) well what is happening is when displayed on TV after encoding/converting to DVD is that the displayed area is about .5 to 1 inch short on left & right side (there are no black bars anywhere) I tried selecting the options Output 1:1 and then 4:3 while there seems to be no difference between the 2 - BOTH out puts seem to cut off the left n right sides...keep in mind source file is 4:3 & I think it should show the whole pic after conversion since it is not, I would like to know how to avoid the left & right cropping. Hope that explains my issue & yes I read the thread you provided - almost had an aneurysm my conversion is 4:3 to 4:3 why it is being cropped is where I am at sea...

What is the actual dimensions of the AVI? It may be 4:3 but only be 640 x 480. Your TV (and the DVD spec) would require 720 x 480, hence your black area left and right.

Thanks for tryin to answer my question - to answer yours ... when I right click the file & choose properties & then go to summary tab: dimensions range from 512 X 384 to 640 X 480 as I mentioned in my last post there are no black bars ANYWHERE after conversion but if I look at the pic on puter then the same frame on TV - the picture on the TV is .5 to 1 inch missing from each Left n right side (ie: up to 2 inches missing horizontally & there are no Black bars ANYWHERE) ... since I think I ask things differently ... allow me to ask in a regular way ... is there a way to increase the "safe area" (that one finds in say Nero Vision/TMPGEnc) so that it displays the info that lies outside the safe area as well in a given program so that when it shows on TV it shows the whole pic not just what was within the safe area.

Ps: Althought u r efforts are well spent & I am gratefull for the links u provided, I have failed to find relevant info.

Does this TV play DVDs and is NTSC?

Then your video will need to be converted (maybe).

Do you have a link to your TVs specs at Sony? You may be able to connect your computer (with a video card?) directly to your TV.

I think I get one thing he's asking.

The "safe area" is because any TV will crop off a small area on all sides of the picture... most Hollywood movies (and other commercial DVDs) will have either black there, or something unimportant. However, when you convert a video file, it goes all the way to the edge, and you can sometimes lose stuff.
