thanks for response chewy...I'll explain in detail...

I was sick of watching .AVI's on my computer so I went out and bought a new (cheap) DVD player that supports Xvid & vidX. Now I can burn my .avi's to disk (most of them to CD-ROMS!!!) and watch them on my big screen TV.

However, I have an .AVI file (4.2GB) thats too big to burn according to Nero 8 - it can burn a single file 2 GB max. Wondering if I can split the file into parts or shrink it down to size etc...so I can enjoy it in all its glorious 52-inch DLP screen detail that it was meant to be!

No need to split if you do not wish to.Just burn as DVD-Rom(UDF) instead of DVD-Rom(ISO). The 2GB max is a limitation of the ISO file system.

since he has an avi/divx/xvid capable player?

some players won't play avi's over the 2 gig limit?

I suppose you mean by converting to mpeg2 you get a compressed video as opposed to the other formats?

A standard 4.7GB DVD can hold 4.38 GB files in maximum, isn't it? Then why Nero thinks 2GB is too large?

As I said earlier,it is the ISO file limitation.
