MOV/MOI Problems - Renamed Files

Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong area. I searched the topics in the forums and couldn't find what I thought was a suitable place to post but please redirect me if I'm wrong. To the point.

I recently recorded a bunch of footage on a trip and when I got back, renamed each .mov clip from its numbered filename the camera had given it to something that reflected the content of the clip. However, to my dismay, when I tried to play them back, by renaming them, I separated them from their respective .moi files, or this is at least my best guess. I renamed about 25 clips in all.

How do I go about resolving this issue?

I'm afraid I was unclear in my last post as to what exactly my problem is.
I recorded the files with a JVC HDD Recorder. The default file format for JVC is the .mov file format. I researched into this and was told all i had to do was change the file extension to .mpg

I did this, clips played just fine, no problems. Then I renamed the .mpg files. After that, when I played the clips, I could hear the sound, which corresponded to the altered titles I'd given the clips, but the video was black screen only. I was worried that I'd never be able to sort out which .moi file went with which .mpg file, but that if i could sort it out, it would work just fine.

Then I played a clip in WMP tonight, and I noticed that in the Now Playing sidebar, the clip still had its original name. Example: MOV01C
So, I renamed the clip MOV01C.mpg in hopes that would solve the problem. No luck. Then I tried renaming it MOV01C.mov, thinking that maybe if it went back to .mov/.moi, it would identify with its .moi file. Wrong again. It changed the file icon to that of Quicktime, but gave the message that it was not a file format Quicktime recognized when I tried to play the file.

Any expert advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

MOVs are definintely not MPGs. Whomever toild you to rename them was wrong.

Change them back to whatever.MOV and they will play in lots of media players, but notably Quicktime. I wouldn't worry too much about the MOIs. I've never seen them but I guess they are identifiers/timing info that help with movie info - the MOVs hold the video content.

Hi again and thank you for the insight on .mov files and the link provided. I was mistaken when I said the files were recorded by the JVC camcorder as .mov files however. In fact, they were recorded as .mod files, which as best as I can understand from what I've read, could be renamed and played as .mpg files. I did this and they played fine, but I ran into the problem losing the video channel when I renamed the files, strange as it may sound. The audio channel remains uncorrupted, but I can't figure out what I did to ruin the footage.

Sorry to keep laboring on and on, but I just loaded one of the clips into Adobe Premiere CS3 and the video is still there and plays just fine. However, when played in premiere, it acts as if it has no audio channel. So... basically my audio plays in WMP and my video plays in Premiere's source window, but somehow a link is severed between the two. Any idea what this link is or how I go about reconnecting the two?

Edit: By some stroke of fate, tried in WMP one more time and footage works fine. No idea how, but thanks for the help.

I read the thread you linked me. Very insightful. I wish I'd come across that weeks ago when this problem first arose. I actually just learned about .m2v files last night, but I like the idea of using cmd to alter them all at once. About me having Premiere CS3, well, lets just say I've always wanted to do this kind of thing, I've just never been formally trained, which im sure comes across in my noobish diction. So, I'll take my beatings as they come.

During the copying of these files several times, I lost the pgr001 file, which could be the problem. I returned the JVC for big expensive "Sony" and so hopefully I won't have to jack with that anymore. Niceeee!

In regards to the files I've been trying to fix, I have them working. Thanks for your help.

I've had problems with a number of JVC camcorders and I finally bought one with a hard drive that caused a headache with the MOV file type. The software that is with a JVC camcorder even if Cyberlink made it, you can't import other file types in it first unless a MOV file is imported first. That is how dumb JVC are. Try this software at: http://www.blazemp.com/mov_converter_software.htm where you can convert MOV to MPEG2.

Did you film in the full frame or wide screen? If I remember correctly, MPEG1 is for the full frame and MPEG2 is for wide screen. Remember to use DVD HQ for best picture quality before producing in your video software but it will use more disc space. Even so, it's worth it in the long run because using DVD LP will ruin picture quality and your DVD home movies will look like VHS. DVD SP is OK but I prefer to film and produce with HQ. HQ always uses more space. A two-hour DVD disc recorded with HQ will turn it into a one-hour disc. This is what I mean with HQ using more space but I prefer HQ with filming and for producing for better picture quality.

I hope you get it sorted. I can understand your anger, I have to send my Sony camcorder back for repairs because I have problems with footage going blurred all the time with the slightest movement in front of it. I have a faulty lense.
